Opportunity 1 – Newcastle College

We have two opportunities for Newcastle College students to participate in The Covid Age below. During these sessions, photographer Danielle Giddins will be inviting individuals to be briefly interviewed about their experiences of Covid-19, and have their portrait taken.

You can find out more information below each flyer, and can sign up via email: thecovidageproject@gmail.com or on the site directly at the bottom of this page.

If you would like more info, please get in touch!

Artist Betty Hill will be delivering an art session aimed at visually capturing either feelings or memories associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly lockdowns. Oil paints and canvases will be provided, and Betty will guide you to tell your story artistically.

This art work will be used in an exhibition at Newcastle University and shared online. You will be welcome to keep the piece after it has been displayed!

During this session, photographer Danielle Giddins will be inviting individuals to be interviewed to share their experiences, and have their portrait taken. We hope that together, these artistic elements will tell a rich story of Newcastle residents and communities, for future generations to look back on.

Places are given on a first come, first served basis. You can sign up by emailing thecovidageproject@gmail.com , or using the submission form below.

A zine (pronounced zeen) is an independently or self-published booklet, often created by physically cutting and gluing text and images together.

You will be working with writer and artist Lauren Vevers to create a zine to creatively tell your story about the pandemic and lockdown. This might include poetry, creative writing and word play, combined with artwork, photographs or other materials such as newspaper clippings or internet print outs.

Opportunity 2 – Allan Court

We would like to hear the stories of people who have experienced the Covid-19 pandemic while living in a care home, or while having a relative/loved one in care.

We are keen to hear the experiences of residents, relatives and care staff and explore the challenges that individuals have faced; things like social distancing and being separated from loved ones for so long and keeping each other healthy and safe. While we understand this has been a hugely traumatic time for many families, we also wish to celebrate the hard work of care staff and shine a light on the ways care professionals and families have coped and pulled each other through this unprecedented time in our history.

Interviews will be recorded on a dictaphone (no visuals) and will be an informal conversation where I ask questions and will invite you to say anything you may wish to share.

The photography collection will be shared alongside interviews (though if you wish to remain anonymous you can) in our online gallery, and hopefully will be exhibited at Newcastle University. They will also be used by Newcastle University’s NICA for research, and Newcastle Council’s Arts Development Team.
